PREVIOUS EMPLOYMENT EXPERIENCE

Association of American Railroads (AAR)

Principal Engineer, Transportation Technology Center, Incorporated, Pueblo, Colorado (1995-1999)

Coordinator of AAR’s Vehicle/Track Performance Program, responsible for over $2.8M annually. This included technical and budgetary direction to six other senior project managers at TTCI. Reported to sponsoring industry committee members at various North American Class 1 railroads. Projects included:

· Wheel Climb Derailment Research including modeling and full-scale simulations

· Track Strength Research Initiative including design and development of first automated track lateral and vertical strength measurement system

Curriculum Vitae: William Charles Shust, P.E.

President of Objective Engineers, Inc responsible to provide competitive solutions in the engineering marketplace. Technically skilled in topics of mechanical design and integrity, including component design, endurance tests, noise and vibration problem solving, modal analysis, litigation support and finite element modeling. Author of over 40 technical reports, papers, and magazine articles.

· Wheel Climb Derailment Research including modeling and full-scale simulations

· Track Strength Research Initiative including design and development of first automated track lateral and vertical strength measurement system

· Neural network modeling of problem vehicle response to track geometry variations, and demonstration tests

· Metal fatigue measurement and life prediction for an ISO tank container

· Thermal high-speed braking stress analysis for railroad transit wheels

· Freight car wheel lockup tests

Project Manager for Truck Performance Research Consortium, responsible for $700k 18-month project to better measure operating wheel forces in poorly steering freight cars and diagnose proper remedial actions.

Supervisor/Senior Test Engineer, Instrumentation Section, AAR’s Chicago Technical Center (1993-1995)

Included both managerial duties as supervisor of nine engineers/technicians, and technical duties as Senior Test Engineer. Typical tests included fatigue simulation on rail car brake beams, transit car wheel thermal and residual stress analyses, and freight car suspension characterization.

Other responsibilities:

· fixture and specialty load cell design,

· generated detailed test plans based on research needs,

· trained new technicians in strain and vibration measurement,

· instrumentation repair and calibration.

Navistar International Truck and Engine Corporation (Engineering and design group for heavy truck manufacturer)

Engineering Analyst, Navistar Technical Center, Fort Wayne, Indiana. (1989-1993)

Developed new test methods within the Structural Analysis Group. Responsibilities included strength analysis and review of component designs, as well as implementing new data acquisition/analysis techniques.

Projects completed included:

    • Full-vehicle endurance tests at proving grounds
    • Vehicle component tests in a servo-hydraulic test lab
    • Taught structural analysis class to in-house mechanical designers
    • Structural review and approval of designs generated in the chassis, body, and electrical groups (using both classical and finite element analyses)
    • Specified test programs for outside vendors to assure mechanical integrity (including MIL-STD-810E and 202)
    • Seat belt strength tests

AEA O’Donnell (Engineering services in mechanical design, analysis and testing)

Test Engineer, O'Donnell & Associates Incorporated, Pittsburgh, PA (1988-1989)

Modal vibration tests

    • Electronic equipment rack for marine defense application
    • High energy steam pipe installation

Resonance tests of a driveshaft isolator for marine defense application

Various stress tests and analysis

    • Damage measures and analysis of fresh refractory casting handling
    • Nuclear piping valve assembly
    • Elevated coal storage bin for fossil power plant
    • Overhead bridge crane at aluminum electrode plant

Responsibilities included all phases of projects within the test group. Excellent communication skills enabled handling of inquiries from prospective clients, supervision of technicians both at customer sites and in the company lab, and preparation of test plans and final reports. Other technical tasks included maintenance of lab equipment, transducer selection and installation, data acquisition and analysis.

Navistar International Truck and Engine Corporation (Engineering and design group for heavy truck manufacturer)

Engineering Analyst, Navistar Technical Center, Fort Wayne, Indiana. (1985-1988)

Test Engineer and Engineering Analyst positions in Dynamics Systems Analysis.

Vibration and ride-quality testing:

    • Vehicle cab isolator system design and testing
    • Engine isolator system design and testing
    • Rear-view mirror vibration tests
    • Interior noise testing
    • Drivetrain vibration tests
    • Finite element modeling
    • Active cab-suspension prototype

Manistique Papers Incorporated, Manistique, Michigan. (Pulp and paper mill)

Engineer's Assistant (summers 1981-1984)

Performed paper-pulp cleaner evaluations which helped enable the mill to use 100% recycled paper.
